called nitrious oxide. It is a gas that we give you through the nose. It induces deep relaxation and
sedation without you loosing consciousness, thus you can opt out at any time. It is also a mild pain killer and potentiates
the effects of the local anesthetic. thus it will help you to be receptive of things you otherwise be scared of. it is given during the treatment and once
the treatment is over the effects are reverse but you may remain feeling relaxed for the rest of the day.
⊕ Options
Depending on the the problem you have or the status of your mouth you will be given all treatment options. You will decide
on the treatment option that you are most comfortable with and can afford .You have an option of having your treatment done under sedation to reduce discomfort.
Treatment can be done in the dental surgery or they may be circumstances that indicate treatment is best done in theater. Assessment is done on a case by case.
⊕ What to do after extracting a tooth?
EXTRACTION OF WIDSOM TOOTH AND ALL TEETH IN THE LOWER JAW: Prior to extraction of thse tooth/teeth it is possible that the extraction may result in
nerve damage therefore lead to numbness/loss of sensation/loss of feeling of part of face and/ or tongue on the side where such extraction took place.
If you should get such numbness, You must report to my dentist immediately
Do not brush your teeth today and tomorrow just rinse your mouth with strong salty water.
Where the dentist has taken out the tooth, do not touch with your tongue, finger, and do not try to clean it with ear buds, toothpick or anything.
Leave it alone, it will heal by itself.
Where the dentist has taken out the tooth there is a hole. That hole is going to fill with blood. The blood will turn into a clot.
DO NOT Remove that blood or clot.
Do not allow food to get into the hole as it will displace the clot and provide food for the bacteria to breed. When you chew use the opposite side.
Where the dentist has taken out the tooth , there is a bone that was supporting the tooth. If you remove/wash away the clot, the bone will expose and
dry out and become infected. The tongue and finger will also push away the gums and expose the bone.
If you allow food to get into the hole, or the blood come out of the hole you will get a sharp burning pain affecting your cheek and ear (it’s called dry socket). If that happens you need to come back to the dentist to have it fixed, but it will not be done for free, you will be charged a fee.
So make sure food does not get into the hole and the blood clot does not come out of the hole.
If you have stitches you will have to come back as instructed by the dentist to remove them.
Please avoid chewing for a least 3 hours, because your lip will be numb and you might chew it without feeling it. So BE CAREFUL NOT TO CHEW YOUR LIP AND
TONGUE. LEAVE THE COTTON WOOL in as instructed by the dentist .

⊕ What to expect when bleaching teeth?
The bleaching light adds no value or advantage to the bleaching process , therefore we don’t use it in our surgery .
Your teeth may become sensitive following the use of the bleaching agent. If this happens stop using the bleach for 3 days and resume thereafter. Repeat
the process if sensitivity returns .
The sensitivity caused by the bleaching agent is transient. It will disappear when you finish your treatment .
⊕ From fillings to root canal therapy.
When you cut a tooth in half it has two solid layers namely enamel and dentin.
In the center of the tooth is vital pulp which is filled with fluid in which the blood vessels and nerves are suspended … a bit like seaweed in the ocean.
The solid layers (enamel and dentin) are like an apple. When an apple is rotten, because it is a solid you can see the boundaries of decay….
And then you can cut off the rotten bits and eat the rest of the good apple…..likewise when your teeth are decayed the dentist will use a drill to excavate the
decayed parts ..until the dentist gets to undecayed healthy tooth …. Then whatever “ditches “ are formed during the excavation , are filled up with a
filling, onlay or inlay depending on the size of the ditch .
That is what is called a restoration of a tooth.
If the extent of the decay is to the pulp, then the decay and the bacteria causing the decay can no longer be contained. Because the pulp is a fluid filled cavity……… it’s like a cup of tea … if someone had to spit in your tea … you can’t remove the spit and drink the remaining tea.. because the whole tea is contaminated (it’s a fluid)…….. if it’s a disposable cup you will throw both the cup and the tea away. If you value the cup you will wash it and make yourself fresh tea.
Likewise if the decay has spread to the pulp, it is no longer contained because the pulp is a fluid filled cavity and the bacteria is free to swim all
the way down to the root tip. If you do not value that tooth then it is taken out (extracted) like the disposable cup that is thrown away .. But if you value the tooth then root canal therapy can be done to save it... Root canal is when the tooth is cleaned and disinfected from the crown to the tip of the roots through the canals in the tooth. The canals are then sealed with a special sealer to prevent ingress of tissue fluid and bacterial proliferation and subsequent abscess formation.
⊕ Alternatives to tooth paste.
Bicarbonate of soda dissolved in water. Dip your tooth brush in it and brush. Do not use the dry powder because your teeth will wear
away with repeated use and become sensitive. Bicabonate of soda will also neutralize acid realeased by bactria that drves the decay pocess.
Pure aqueous cream, fragrance free. It is great especially for people allergic to toothpaste and get the white ropy saliva at the edges of the mouth.
Local Anasthesia
A local anasthetic can be apply to the area that the dentist is going to be working on, in order to make that part of your mouth numb so as to reduce
discomfort during treatment.
It normally only takes a few minutes to for it to take effect, you will lose feeling in the area where a local anaesthetic is given. The numbness will wear
off and sensation will return a few hours later.
Concious or light Sedation
Nitrous oxide also known as happy gas, is a gas that we give you through the nose. It is mild sedative , analgesic and hypnotic drug that allows
the patient to go into conscious sedation.
The patient is able to talk and is aware of their environment but the element of fear and apprehension at being at the dentist is reduced and
the patient is more relaxed and receptive of procedures they would otherwise be very afraid of.
The effects of nitrous oxide are reversed immediately when the patient is put on oxygen. It is a very safe drug to use on both adult and
children whatever the age.
There are some people on whom sedation cannot used. The dentist will let you know if you are in that group of people.
Theatre - heavy sedation
Sometimes patients (usually children) need something stronger than happy gas sedation. The dentist will then book the child for treatment in theater in those exceptional cases.

Toothcare is everyone's business
Taking good care of your teeth will go a long way to keep them in great condition for a long time. Whether you have
all your orginal teeth or whether you have some comestic caps and dentures, it is important that you be vigilant with
your dental routines.
Brush your teeth twice daily, in the morning to give you freash breath and at night to remove all the plaque causing
agents that build up why you eat your way through the day.
Come for a check up at least twice a year. Tooth decay takes a while to get started, but once started it will quickly spread
if left untreated. Having a check up will make it possible for the tooth decay to be spotted early and dealth with before it
causes extensive damage.
Why do I need to do clean my teeth every six months?
Our saliva, like natural water contains mineral salts . Where the saliva pools, these salts precipitate and deposit on
our teeth as calculus. The same way lime stone is formed in nature. These deposits are porous like lime stone and bacteria
ingresses in the microscopic caves and thrives there. Your tooth brush bristles cannot reach these microscopic caves
in the calculus. The body can sense that there is an area with high a bacteria population, so it will increase blood
flow to that area to try and get the white blood cell and antibodies to kill the bacteria. Because the bacteria are
not in the gums but in the calculus, the immune system cannot reach it.
When you try to brush your teeth which have these rough calculus deposits , the gums which have a increased blood flow
will rub against the rough calculus , bruise and therefore bleed easily… that is why your gums bleeds when you do not
do your scale and polish at the dentist regularly .
After a while the body can sense that it cannot do anything about these bacterial deposits, so the gum and jaw bone in
that area will retreat away from the calculus deposits. This will reduce support to your teeth making them loose and
the sensitive tooth root will be exposed making your teeth sensitive.
