Local Anasthesia

A local anasthetic can be apply to the area that the dentist is going to be working on, in order to make that part of your mouth numb so as to reduce discomfort during treatment. It normally only takes a few minutes to for it to take effect, you will lose feeling in the area where a local anaesthetic is given. The numbness will wear off and sensation will return a few hours later.

Concious or light Sedation

Nitrous oxide also known as happy gas, is a gas that we give you through the nose. It is mild sedative , analgesic and hypnotic drug that allows the patient to go into conscious sedation. The patient is able to talk and is aware of their environment but the element of fear and apprehension at being at the dentist is reduced and the patient is more relaxed and receptive of procedures they would otherwise be very afraid of. The effects of nitrous oxide are reversed immediately when the patient is put on oxygen. It is a very safe drug to use on both adult and children whatever the age. There are some people on whom sedation cannot used. The dentist will let you know if you are in that group of people.

Theatre - heavy sedation

Sometimes patients (usually children) need something stronger than happy gas sedation. The dentist will then book the child for treatment in theater in those exceptional cases.

Toothcare is everyone's business

Taking good care of your teeth will go a long way to keep them in great condition for a long time. Whether you have all your orginal teeth or whether you have some comestic caps and dentures, it is important that you be vigilant with your dental routines.

Brush your teeth twice daily, in the morning to give you freash breath and at night to remove all the plaque causing agents that build up why you eat your way through the day.

Come for a check up at least twice a year. Tooth decay takes a while to get started, but once started it will quickly spread if left untreated. Having a check up will make it possible for the tooth decay to be spotted early and dealth with before it causes extensive damage.

Why do I need to do clean my teeth every six months?

Our saliva, like natural water contains mineral salts . Where the saliva pools, these salts precipitate and deposit on our teeth as calculus. The same way lime stone is formed in nature. These deposits are porous like lime stone and bacteria ingresses in the microscopic caves and thrives there. Your tooth brush bristles cannot reach these microscopic caves in the calculus. The body can sense that there is an area with high a bacteria population, so it will increase blood flow to that area to try and get the white blood cell and antibodies to kill the bacteria. Because the bacteria are not in the gums but in the calculus, the immune system cannot reach it. When you try to brush your teeth which have these rough calculus deposits , the gums which have a increased blood flow will rub against the rough calculus , bruise and therefore bleed easily… that is why your gums bleeds when you do not do your scale and polish at the dentist regularly . After a while the body can sense that it cannot do anything about these bacterial deposits, so the gum and jaw bone in that area will retreat away from the calculus deposits. This will reduce support to your teeth making them loose and the sensitive tooth root will be exposed making your teeth sensitive.
